Psychometric Testing
What is Psychometric Testing?
Psychometric testing is a method of assessing candidates for recruitment or employees for development by testing their cognitive ability or their personality. Tests provide a means of objectively verifying the traits and abilities of people, and in the context of work, aim to determine how suitable a given person is for a given role or how best to progress them.
General mental ability has been shown to be one of the strongest predictors of performance, which can be measured by means of a psychometric or aptitude test. Personality testing adds incremental validity to the predictive power of these tests, meaning that personality testing combined with general mental ability testing does an excellent job of telling which candidates are likely to perform well and which may struggle.
Investing in psychometric testing can save tens of thousands of euro on the wrong hire, and help employers to understand traits, abilities and qualities that may not be obvious through CVs, experience or interview. The most common ability tests are verbal ability, numerical ability and spatial ability but test batteries can include clerical skills, critical reasoning, learning styles, values and more.
